If there is one particular failing that the MSI Wind U160 has as a netbook, it is that it only comes with 1GB RAM, meaning you'll be wanting to upgrade almost as soon as you get it home (about £30). Otherwise there is little on offer to differentiate the MSI Wind U160 from other netbook rivals. But at the same time the Wind U160 doesn't do anything wrong. There are cheaper netbooks that offer almost identical performance if budget is a concern, but in a category where everything is much of a muchness, the long battery life and interesting design might appeal.

The integrated graphics is sufficient to display image only, while gaming and HD playback are way out of its league. If you’re planning to connect and external monitor, pay attention to the fact that the VGA is limited to a resolution of 1400x1050. Although it contains the least demanding Windows version, Windows 7 Starter, 1 GB DDR2 which this small guy contains will often be too little for comfortable use. A 250 GB HDD showcased outstanding performance, while the battery failed to live up to “15H+” sticker on the packaging. The 6-cell battery barely hit five hours in standard operating mode, while doubling that result under minimum load. Another problem might be the fact that the battery requires four hours to charge with the netbook off, which is more than many can afford.

Basic Netbooks are a fairly simple formula to pull off. Combine an Intel Atom 450 processor, 1GB of RAM, Windows 7 Starter, and a 250GB hard drive, and you've got any of an army of products from Asus, Acer, HP, and others. The basic-as-it-gets MSI Wind U160-007US is a leader in battery life, but shouldn't cost $80 more than comparable systems.

The MSI Wind U160-007US ($380 street) distinguishes itself with a big battery that delivered almost 9 hours of battery life. But other than that, this netbook doesn't stand out from the rest.

The MSI Wind U160DX is slightly different in design compared to past 10.1in Wind netbooks that we've reviewed, but it still retains the fast performance that MSI is well known for. Overall, we really like the MSI Wind U160DX. MSI's Wind U160 is one of the smallest and lightest netbooks on the market. If portability is your primary factor in a netbook, than the U160 is an excellent choice. The problem is that it sacrifices running time with the three-cell battery pack and its $300 price tag puts it above many other netbooks that feature a smaller battery pack.

There's nothing really feature wise that makes this netbook stand out, except probably the battery. At the same time, there really is not that much we can find at fault with this MSI netbook. If your main activities are geared towards browsing the Web, social networking, listening to music, and reading and editing documents, then you should definitely check this netbook.

MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI), Tayvan kökenli 1986 yılından beri hizmet veren ve özellikle masa üstü bilgisayar anakartları ile bilinen bir markadır. MSI aynı zamanda grafik kartları, barebone PCler, notebooklar, network ürünleri, serverlar, multimedia ürünlerde tasarlayıp üretmektedir. MSI diğer tüm tayvanlı bilgisayar üreticileri gibi ürünlerini OEM/ODM prensibi ile satmaktadır. Ürünlerini aynı zamanda dünya genelinde “MSI” adı altında satan firmanın MSI markalı notebooklarının global pazar payı düşüktür.

Bu tür grafik kaetları oyunlar için pek ideal değil. Eğer bir oyunu çalıştıracak olurlarsa ya grafiksel hatalarla ya da düşük frame oranlarıyla çalıştırabilirler. Oyuncular için uygun değiller. Ofis ve internet ise oyunların aksine bu GPU lar için sorun değil.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Dahili (paylaşımlı bellekli) Intel Atom N4xx serisi işlemcilerde kullanılan grafik kartı. Eski GMA 950lere nazaran biraz daha hızlı ve bu yüzden 3D oyunlar veya HD videolar için uygun değil (sadece MPEG2 desteği mevcut)

Intel Atom:

Intel Atom serisi 64-Bit bir işlemci olup UMPC ve MID türü gibi küçük notebooklar için ucuz bir işlemci alternatifidir. Yeni mimarinin özelliği “in order” uygulamasını kullanması. Böylece transistor sayısı azaltılıp, daha ucuz bir üretim mümkün.

N450: GMA 3150 GPU ve dahili bellek kontrolörüne sahip Netbooklar için üretilen Intel Atom serisi işlemci. Sistem performansı Atom N280 / GMA 950 kombinasyonundan sadece biraz daha hızlı.

N550: Sadece 8.5 Watt güç tüketimi olan Dual Core Atom işlemci. 1.5 GHz gibi düşük saat hızından ötürü bazen N465 Atom işlemciden bile daha yavaş.
